Retainer Instructions

These simple instructions will help to keep your retainer safe so you don’t need to get it replaced.

  1. After braces removal, wear your retainer full time for the first week. After a week, you can wear them at night while sleeping (at least 8-10 hours)
  2. If the retainers ever feel tight when putting them on, increase your wear time to maintain proper alignment.
  3. Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it in its case!
  4. Clean your retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water. Brushing the retainer removes plaque and eliminates odors. Effervescent tablets should be used up to once a day, but do not take the place of brushing.
  5. When a retainer is not in your mouth, it should ALWAYS be in a retainer case. Pets love to chew on them!
  6. Initially, you may find it difficult to speak. Practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud to get used to it faster.
  7. Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If a retainer is lost or broken call us immediately.
  8. If you have any questions or concerns about your retainer, or it needs adjusting, call us. Do not try to adjust it yourself.
  9. Always bring your retainer to your appointment.
  10. Retainer replacements are expensive, but with proper care they can last for years.
  11. Remove your retainer when swimming
  12. Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, pockets, the washing machine, and napkins.
